CHAPTER 28

I waited for Antelope in the cold under the green canvas awning outside the Probation and Parole offices. Snow melt dripped onto the sidewalk from the roof five stories above. When the sun went down, the walkway would be treacherous with ice. Across the street, in a gazebo near the unused railroad tracks, children lined up to visit Santa’s Depot. I was thinking about what Cedric had told me when Antelope appeared.

“Are you waiting for me?”

“I want to tell you something Cassandra doesn’t need to know.”

“This is getting interesting.”

“I had lunch with Cedric Yee. He held back information when you questioned him the other day.”

“Why did he tell you? Why not come directly to me?”

“Something about you getting the wrong idea about him and Kimi. He’s not the most direct communicator.”

“You can say that again. What did he hold back?”

“He admitted that he went to her house Friday night.”

“I asked him about that and he flat-out lied to me. On the face of it, though, it doesn’t add much.”

“The point is, he claims the sheriff was there.”

“On Friday night?”

“At Kimi’s house, knocking on the door and looking for her car in the garage.”

“I’ll have another conversation with Cedric. Cassandra is coming now. That was a good call, by the way. She doesn’t need to know about this.”
